Michael Sanderling becomes the new Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra

Starting the 2021/22 concert season, Michael Sanderling will become the Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.

On his future job as Chief Conductor in Lucerne, Michael Sanderling says:

"I am delighted to become the Chief Conductor of Lucerne Symphony Orchestra - an orchestra truly renowned not only in Switzerland but also around the world for both its great traditions and its innovation. I am excited and inspired by the energy, diversity and vision both of the orchestra and of Numa Bischof Ullmann’s team. I am looking forward to a new artistic era alongside the outstanding musicians of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.  I hope that the next few years will be a musically thrilling time for everyone who experiences, appreciates and supports this orchestra both at home and abroad."

Since 2010, Michael Sanderling has been closely associated with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Last season, he conducted the orchestra in March 2019 on their tour of South Korea with works by Brahms, Beethoven, Holliger and Rachmaninoff before returning to Lucerne for subscription concerts, featuring Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, in May 2019.

From 2011 to 2019, Michael Sanderling was Principal Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. During his hugely successful tenure, their critically acclaimed recordings together included the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Shostakovich for Sony Classics. He has also conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Orchestre de Paris, Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, Munich Philharmonic and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, to name just a few of today’s leading orchestras. He makes his US debut in 2021 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
