Deutsche Radio-Philharmonie Saarbrücken

Just three years after it was founded, the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern already counts as one of ARD’s well-known orchestras.

Regular performance venues are in Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern, but also in the greater SaarLorLux region and in Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition, the orchestra also performs concert series in Karlsruhe, Mainz and in the Old Opera House in Frankfurt. This season, it will be guest at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Ottobeuren Basilica, in the Cité de la Musique in Paris, at the music festival Musikfestspiele Saar and at the Dresden Music Festival.

Works by Claude Vivier, who died in 1983 at the age of 35 and who was hailed by Györy Ligeti as “the finest French composer of his generation”, form one of the artistic highlights of the season. Time and again, leading figures of modernity such as Béla Bartók, Zoltan Kodaly, Sergei Prokofiev, Igor Stravinsky, Leo Weiner, Ferruccio Busoni or Dmitri Shostakovich also feature in the programmes with their works. Countless premieres are planned for the course of the season, with pieces by Milko Kelemen, Fabrice Bollon, Daniel Glaus and Ferran Cruixent.

Guest performers this season include budding young pianists such as Anny Hwang and Joseph Moog, as well as famous international soloists, such as the violinists Vadim Repin and Augustin Hadelich, and cellists Gautier Capuçon and Johannes Moser. A further focus of the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is formed by the vocal section, as with the mass in F minor by Anton Bruckner, for example, or the thematically arranged programme of arias with top-class singers such as Michael Schade, Juliane Banse, Sibylla Rubens, Martin Mitterrutzner, Anke Vondung and Malin Hartelius, the Bavarian Radio Choir and the Hilliard Ensemble. There will also be (re-) encounters with the conductors Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Günther Herbig, Gennadij Rozhdestvenskij, Jacques Mercier, Pablo González, Emilio Pomàrico, Michael Sanderling and Christian Arming, among others.

Full recordings of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies (Christoph Poppen), Brahms (Stanislaw Skrowaczewski) and Théodore Gouvy (Jacques Mercier) will be completed this season. The CDs already available now include the full recording of Mendelssohn’s symphonies lead by principal conductor Christoph Poppen.
