Stefan Schulz, born 1971 in Berlin, played the horn and switched later to the trombone. He studied at the music academies of Berlin and Chicago. From 1993 to 2002 he played the bass trombone at the Staatskapelle Berlin. Since 2002 Stefan Schulz has been member of the Berliner Philharmoniker. 2004 he was appointed to a professorship at the Universität der Künste Berlin.
Numerous orchestras such as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Staatsoper Wiesbaden, the Philharmonia Wien and the Aarhus Symfoniorkester invited Stefan Schulz as a soloist. He premiered Daniel Schnyder’s concerto for bass trombone “subZERO” in Germany, Spain, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland. In September 2008, Stefan Schulz performed another composition for bass trombone and orchestra by Daniel Schnyder with the Absolute Ensemble from New York under the direction of Kristjan Järvi at the Bremer Musikfest.
In October 2010 he played the “Skyline Symphonic Jazz Suite” for bass trombone and orchestra at the founding concert of the new “Frankfurt Chamber Orchestra Skyline Symphony’ under the direction of Michael Sanderling.
As a committed chamber music partner Stefan Schulz is member of the Solisten der Berliner Philharmoniker, of the Brass Ensemble of the Berliner Philharmoniker and of the Daniel Schnyder Trio. He plays regularly with the Ensemble German Brass.
The concert suite ‘roTor’ for bass trombone and orchestra that Daniel Schnyder composed for Stefan Schulz was premiered in December 2008 with the Kammerakademie Potsdam under the direction of Michael Sanderling. In March 2010 the Swedish label BIS recorded the suite with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and will release the CD in 2011. BIS will also release Stefan Schulz’ first solo album in the end of 2010. In June 2009, he premiered a composition by Poul Ruders with Århus Sinfonietta.
In 2011 Stefan Schulz will appear at the Music Festival of the Americas (USA), at Kissinger Winterzauber as well as in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, the USA and Japan.
